UL 50E Spray Test Apparatus for NEMA 250 Enclosures is compounded by three spray heads mounted in a water supply pipe frame, as the design suggested by UL 1278, NEMA 250, and UL 1598; these standards also specify the spray head nozzles.

UL Rain Tester

The UL Rain Tester is compounded by three spray heads mounted in a water supply pipe frame, as the design suggested by UL 1278 and UL 1598; these standards also specify the spray head nozzles.

Complies with various IEC, EN, CE, VDE, UL & CSA requirements

Application
To perform tests with this apparatus, you will need a water supply to maintain a pressure of 34.5Kpa(5PSI) measured by a pressure gauge in each spray head.

UL 50E vs NEMA 250 – What Is the Difference?

Although UL 50E and NEMA 250 are closely related, they are not the same standard.

NEMA 250 is a performance standard that defines enclosure types (such as Type 3R, 4, 4X, 6, etc.) and specifies the environmental protection requirements, including rain, hose-directed water, corrosion resistance, and icing conditions.

UL 50E, on the other hand, is a safety standard published by Underwriters Laboratories that provides detailed test methods used to verify compliance with NEMA 250 enclosure ratings.

In practical terms:

  • NEMA 250 defines the protection level

  • UL 50E defines how the testing is performed

For example, the rain test required for NEMA Type 3R enclosures is executed according to the procedures described in UL 50E. The spray configuration, nozzle design, water flow rate, pressure, and exposure duration are specified in UL 50E to validate compliance with NEMA 250.

Therefore, a spray system described as “UL 50E compliant” ensures that the equipment reproduces the official test methodology required to certify NEMA 250 enclosure types.
